The Oxford Union

The “Union” is the traditional (if a little passe) debating hub of Oxford University, so this (via the Pub Philosopher) I suppose, is mildly heartening:

“Flemming Rose [The Editor of Jyllands-Posten] was the main speaker in a debate at the Oxford Union a couple of weeks ago. It was his first public appearance since the publication of the Mohammed cartoons. The motion “This house believes free speech should be moderated by respect for religion” was defeated by 129 votes to 59.” Good.

It’s interesting, and depressing, to see that two members of Tony Blair’s parliamentary party supported the motion.
