As For That Other Constitution…

You may remember that previous major changes to the way the European Union works were rejected by EU member states like Denmark and Ireland. The EU, of course, wasn’t going to stand for that, so it asked the people of those countries if they’d mind thinking again. Suitably chastened, the voters admitted they were wrong all along and those very intelligent chaps in Brussels with the long list of letters after their names were right. Now the Austrian Chancellor is suggesting that they should use that tactic on France and the Netherlands to ensure passage of the EU Constitution. If this suggestion gains adherents, Tony Blair, who has shelved plans for what would probably be a personally-bruising referendum in the UK, will probably have to track even more Euroskeptic. Perhaps even he might realise that in technocratic Europe, bad ideas never go away…
