Kathryn, those are the arguments of the laager. Yes it’s true that there are a good number of people who cannot be talked out of the idea that the President is “an anti-sex Jesus freak,” (for the record, that’s not how I see Mr. Bush – in my view, he is, roughly speaking, an American equivalent of a European Christian Democrat) but there are a lot more people who can be talked into the idea that that’s what he, and, much more importantly, the GOP, are in danger of becoming. Appointing Ms Orr to that particular job can only reinforce that impression. That’s not the way to win an election.
