My father was an officer in WWII, and was a genuine hero. He was in several serious engagements in Europe, the most significant being the Battle of the Bulge, receiving for his actions the Silver Star for gallantry under fire. He also received the Purple Heart and Air Medal, for missions flown as a forward observer, flying in a Piper Cub with only a radio to direct artillery fire on enemy emplacements. He also liberated a concentration camp. He came home to a normal existence and my brother and I resulted from his marriage to a childhood friend. He passed away in 1991. Not a day passes that I don’t miss him.

To all the veterans who read this: thank you for your service from a brother soldier.
