The Corner

One Memory of Specter . . .

. . . and a positive one, since the dumping on him is plentiful (and, of course, deserved). One day, I was sitting in the Senate gallery. Specter was talking. And George Mitchell, really ticked, said, “But you already said that!” (I can’t remember what the topic was.) Specter replied, coolly — his voice rising not a bit — “Sometimes we indulge in a little repetition in this body.” So true. And beautifully said. Occasionally, when someone says to me, “But you said that already,” I’ll tell that story, with its ending: “Sometimes we indulge in a little repetition in this body.” Specter had strengths, as WFB knew when he invited the senator to debate with him: I mean, on his side, in a televised team debate.

Anyway — Go Toomey.
