After unveiling his school-safety recommendations earlier yesterday, former congressman Asa Hutchinson said on CNN that he is also “open to expanding background checks.” “Absolutely,” Hutchinson, director of the NRA-backed School Shield task force, told Wolf Blitzer when asked about the issue. “You can do it in a way that does not infringe on an individual and make it hard for an individual to transfer to a friend or a neighbor.” He reiterated, though, that he’s more focused on protecting schools and that the task force’s recommendations do more than gun-control laws ever could to make America’s children safer.

The NRA later told CNN that Hutchinson was “not speaking for the NRA” on the subject of background checks, and that those were his personal views.

The former Arkansas representative also had a recommendation for New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, saying he wished Bloomberg “would take his tens of millions of dollars. . . and put that money into school-safety programs” instead of pushing for gun-control legislation.
