Not As Good As You Think

That’s the name of a new film, presented by the Pacific Research Institute, that exposes “the myth of the middle-class school.” That is, it shows that the problems of American public education are not confined to inner-city schools, or underfunded schools, or schools that lack adequate facilities and community support. Educational mediocrity isn’t merely a reflection of the composition of the student population. The problems are structural — they have to do with perverse or missing incentives in a system dominated by government-run institutions, bureaucracy, central planning, flawed assessments, and union protectionism.

A significant barrier to reform, however, is that large swaths of the taxpaying public believe that their own local schools are fine but that “those other schools” are ineffective. Nope, that’s not it.
