The Corner

From That Ninth Circuit Decision

A reader points out:

From the continuation of footnote one, the letter to parents on page 15065: “I understand answering questions may make my child feel uncomfortable. It this occurs, then, Kristi Seymour, the research study coordinator, will assist us in locating a therapist for further psychological help if necessary.”

Oh wouldn’t you love to have the principal of that school to have influence over your children’s lives!

For the record, I know nothing about the case save for the few quick things I’ve read thus far (I’ve far from read the whole opinion.). And it certainly seems right that there’s nothing, say, in the Constitution that says that parents have an exclusive right to teach their kids about sex–that’s clearly something that would be an issue for something a lot more local.

This may be more a story about left-coast politics run amuck in school than a court outrage. (According to one story: “Parents whose students took the survey signed consent forms. But the forms never mentioned sex would be a topic.”! But that’s a problem with the school, way before anyone got near the courts.) That the court has abolished parenthood as this suggests sounds a bit much as an interpretation. But maybe I’ve missed something. In any case, I suspect we’ll be hearing more about this case….
