Recently appointed treasury secretary Jack Lew has discarded his doodle-like signature – a chain of eight loops – in favor of a more traditional-looking John Hancock, the Treasury announced Tuesday. Below is what his signature looked like as White House budget director, and what it’ll look like on our currency:
The Washington Post report that Lew’s signature was “his most remarked-upon trait” – apparently his handwriting left more of an impression than anything else during his tenure as budget adviser to President Clinton or chief of staff to President Obama.
The president light-heartedly assured Americans that Lew would “work to make at least one letter legible in order not to debase our currency” back in January when he nominated Lew for the office.
The new $5 bills bearing his signature are expected to be in circulation this fall.
