How idiotic. Sullivan has criticized the Vatican over Israel, Iraq, and the Middle East generally. More important, it’s not “cafeteria Catholicism” to disagree with particular pronouncements of Vatican officials, or even the pope, on foreign-policy matters. Has the pope ever said or even implied otherwise? Have you? Sullivan has been writing about Catholicism for what feels like 500 years, but he never seems to have a grasp of the basics.
