Mr. Smith Stops Obamacare?

Geraghty, in his “Morning Jolt” newsletter (you should subscribe), asks: “How Could This Bill Possibly Get Worse? Have It Sung by Yanni?” Well, I don’t know about Yanni, but I’d be willing to be that somewhere in its thousands of pages there’s a provision to build a dam on Willet Creek.

Stacy McCain linked to a Powerline post that lamented, “Does all of this activism matter? It won’t stop the Democrats from doing whatever they have to do to pass a government takeover bill…” McCain offered his own pep talk, but I defer to Jefferson Smith (yes, I’m a sucker for Capra movies):

I guess this is just another lost cause, Mr. Paine. All you people don’t know about lost causes. Mr. Paine does. He said once they were the only causes worth fighting for…. You think I’m licked. You all think I’m licked. Well, I’m not licked. And I’m going to stay right here and fight for this lost cause. Even if the room gets filled with lies like these, and the Taylors and all their armies come marching into this place.

In May and June of 2007, everyone who was anyone in Washington figured the McCain/Bush/Kennedy amnesty bill was guaranteed to pass; Paul Weyrich wrote at the time, “In all of the years I have been here I never have known a time when the establishment really wants something that the establishment cannot obtain it. And the establishment really wants this bill.” And yet two weeks later it utterly collapsed.

To quote another great performer, “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never.”
