On Mormonism & Race

From a reader:

However uncomfortable I may be about it as a Mormon, I think it’s a fair question to ask Romney about Blacks being barred from holding the priesthood until 1978, after being allowed to hold the priesthood under Joseph Smith.   I also think that Romney has a good answer. His father, George Romney, at great risk to his own reputation stood for civil rights. The Romneys were on the right side of history. It speaks very well of them.   Another point about Mormonism. If this were pre-1890 or pre-1978, I could see how Mormonism could be a sticking point. But where we play by generally accepted social norms today, our doctrinal differences are minor with regard and even insignificant in a public sphere, and as you mentioned, Romney is not running on his religion, I feel he should be acceptable to the general public.
