Late last year, a movie critics’ panel on the PBS chat show Charlie Rose touted the crop of liberal movies that would be considered for the Oscars. (One of my favorite lines was A.O. Scott of the New York Times claiming: “I liked ‘Syriana.’ I thought it was very hard to follow in a way that I found very engaging and bracing.”) Entertainment Weekly’s Lisa Schwarzabaum almost leaped out of her chair for Brokeback Mountain: “That this major Hollywood movie… about two men in [love], may well, may quite likely win Oscars. This is fantastic! This is extraordinary!” More here.
