More Details on Iran’s Support of Anti-Israel Demonstrators and Threats against Trump

The U.S. intelligence community disclosed more information today about Iran’s support for the anti-Israel protest movement in the United States and said it assesses that Tehran’s efforts to assassinate Donald Trump will continue after the election.

In today’s bulletin, the National Intelligence Community disclosed election-interference-related intelligence. The document, which is dated October 8, focuses on the intelligence community’s expectations for the period from Election Day through the presidential inauguration on January 20.

“Efforts by Iran to assassinate former President Trump and other US officials, which are likely to persist after voting ends, regardless of the projected outcome,” the assessment said.

In a previous election-related intelligence assessment, officials said Iran had provided financial support to the anti-Israel protest movement and contacted participants, who may have unknowingly connected with Iran-linked actors, through social media.

The update today provided a bit more detail about Iran’s efforts to stoke anti-Israel sentiment in America. “In May and June, Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) encouraged a US person via social media, including by offering to send money for travel, to attend a pro-Palestinian protest in Washington, DC.”

It also said that Iran might seek to leak information online to foment death threats against U.S. election officials, adding that “Iranian actors also published personally identifiable information about US federal and state officials to try to incite violence.” The document did not specify when that occurred.
