The Mightiest ‘A’

The Democrats celebrated abortion to such an extent last night, I was wondering when they’d move on to amnesty and acid. (Historical note: In 1972, George McGovern was tagged as “the triple-A candidate,” standing for “amnesty, abortion, and acid.” The first “A” referred to Vietnam War draft dodgers, not to illegal aliens. The third referred to drugs. The middle one — well, you know . . .) (Further historical note: The tag stemmed from an off-the-record remark made to Robert Novak by a Democratic senator during the primaries. That Democrat was Tom Eagleton — who, briefly, would be McGovern’s running mate. Novak revealed his source decades later, after Eagleton’s death. Isn’t politics fun, sometimes?)
