The Times has the breaking story of President Obama’s much anticipated, largely meaningless executive order closing Guantanamo Bay. The order also directs the CIA to close any secret prisons it may be operating throughout the world (i.e., the classified “black sites” that were exposed by the Washington Post a couple of years ago). The Times, however, has garbled the story in a headline which reads: ”Obama Directs C.I.A. to Shut Guantánamo”. (Gitmo is run by the Navy, not the CIA.) As the executive order is long on symbolism and exceedingly light on substance, excuse me for finding the headline more interesting than the story.
