Vladimir Putin will begin to feel real pressure once the United States and its allies implement sanctions against Russia, says Senator John McCain (R., Ariz.). Even though much of Europe depends on Russian energy, the sanctions would be a strong rejection of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’s Crimea, as that is Putin’s only real leverage.
“Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country,” McCain told CNN’s State of the Union. “It’s kleptocracy, it’s corruption, it’s a nation that is really only dependent upon oil and gas for their economy.”
The U.S. should also consider militarily assisting other countries in the region that could be under threat from Russia, such as Georgia and Moldova, he added.
