MBD: Trump’s Bronx Rally Might Be Remembered as a Genius Move

National Review senior writer Michael Brendan Dougherty, on Friday’s edition of The Editors, said Donald Trump’s well-attended rally in the Bronx this week is bad news for Joe Biden, who is “just sort of sitting on the sidelines” while his Republican rival gets out there.

“It’s a sign of the shifting coalitions,” said Dougherty, “and it’s just a bad sign for Biden in that this is deep-blue Democratic turf that Trump is campaigning in. . . . People feel the Bronx is owned by Democrats.”

Dougherty noted that despite Trump’s schedule-consuming court schedule, “he’s still finding time — at least locally in the tri-state area — to have these kinds of events after he gets out of court, and it does work well for him.” He said the move could benefit Trump: “If this cashes out in further racial realignment in the election . . . this will look like a genius move. . . .

“And,” Dougherty continued, “now his campaign clearly is more professional [than in 2016] and clearly thinks this is a route to not just more votes, but also to driving Democrats crazy. So I think it’s very smart of him to do this.”
