To Live and Die in L.A., Poultry Edition

I used to know a very nice lady who was a state senator in Pennsylvania. She was one of those “socially moderate” Republicans we hear so much about: pro-choice but horrified by veal. I can understand being one or the other, but it is difficult for me to understand being both at the same time.

I thought of her just now when I received a press release from some very earnest people touting new California regulations that will help the people of that beleaguered state “meet the emotional needs of chickens.” That’s where we are: Human beings have no right to life, but chickens have the right to an emotionally tranquil one.

We live in an age of wonders, but sometimes, I really do hate the 21st century.
