THE LIBBY TRIAL GETS UNDERWAY

Judge Reggie Walton is instructing the jury this morning at the beginning of the Libby trial.  He told them that “no evidence will be presented to you with regard to Valerie Plame Wilson’s status” with the CIA.  “That is because,” Walton continued, “what her actual status was or whether any damage would result from the disclosure of her status are totally irrelevant” to the jury’s decision on whether Libby is guilty on perjury or obstruction of justice charges.  “You must not consider those matters in your deliberations or speculate or guess about them,” Walton told the jury.  At the same time, however, Walton told the jurors they can consider what Libby knew or believed about Wilson’s status — which, of course, they have no way of evaluating because they will not know her actual status.
