Mark, I did not mean to suggest that it was particularly exploitative for someone to give Ms. Dupre a record contract. I meant to make the point that sexual notoriety — even absent any visible talent — seems to lead to record contracts, TV shows and the like. I’m thinking Paris Hilton here, but also Donna Rice — of Gary Hart fame — who got a TV commercial out of it and others whose names do not jump to mind. My problem with this is that it teaches watching teens a lesson that is but rarely true, about what gets rewarded in life. How many teen runaway hookers really become rock stars or well-paid actresses? Probably fewer than the number of young actresses and rock stars who become drug or alcohol-addicted exhibitionists.
