Leading the Economy

Michael Gerson makes a good point about one of the questions at the CNBC debate. Becky Quick had said that Rubio’s financial record “raises the question whether you have the maturity and wisdom to lead this $17 trillion economy.” Gerson comments that “an American president does not lead the economy. He helps create laws that marginally improve or complicate economic conditions.”

If one of the moderators at tonight’s debate says something similar, I hope one of the candidates will push back against the grandiose conception of the president’s, and the government’s, role implied in such language.
