The pollsters at Rasmussen are fond of using their questions now and then to demonstrate how pliable the notion of “public opinion” really is. Yesterday, they published a poll in which two similarly selected samples of voters were asked for their opinions about Nancy Pelosi, but to one sample she was simply described as “Nancy Pelosi” and to the other as “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.” Among the sample that wasn’t given the “House Speaker” title, Pelosi was viewed favorably by 46 percent and unfavorably by 50 percent. Among the other sample, to whom she was described as the Speaker of the House, only 38 percent rated her favorably, and 58 percent unfavorably.
