If Senator Harris is the Democratic nominee against President Trump in 2020, he will be able to say that she wants to take away most Americans’ insurance and put them on a government plan. And he’ll be right. We have good reasons for thinking that voters will take that charge seriously.
Harris’s blithe endorsement of the end of the kind of insurance most Americans use — and which they usually tell pollsters they are satisfied with — is our best evidence yet that the competitive pressure of the Democratic primaries is pulling the party so far to the left as to reduce its chances in the general election.
