He’ll get no credit for it from the press or anti-Trumpists on the left and right, but it couldn’t have been easy for Jeff Flake to come around on the tax bill. Whatever you think of how Flake has handled the last year, there is no doubt that Trump has treated him abysmally. It would have been understandable if Flake had let his feelings get the best of him and found a rationale for opposing a measure he would ordinarily support. Instead, he put those feelings aside and voted for the bill, helping Trump win the biggest legislative victory of his tenure. It was an act of principle certain to be ignored or dismissed.
