If you are a politics junkie who follows political commentators and reporters across social media and tunes in to the cable-news networks, I just want to reassure you that you are not going crazy.
People are lying more freely and brazenly as the election approaches. They are stubbornly, knowingly, and cynically holding public figures to a “standard of misconstrual.” That is, they will willfully deprive the quotes of (say) J. D. Vance of context in order to present a technically accurate “snippet” that “create stories” that can be distorted into their preferred shape.
The information environment is being deliberately poisoned, and if you feel sick from it, that’s probably a sign of good mental health and balance.
