It’s Baaaack!

Arlen Specter really does not seem to know what’s going on around him. His op-ed in Monday’s WaPo arguing for amnesty for illegal immigrants says “Let them hold the status of those with green cards — without the automatic path to citizenship that was the core component of critics’ argument that reform efforts were really amnesty.” Well, first of all, to have a green card is, by definition, to be on a path to citizenship, since naturalization requires five years (usually) of residence with a green card. But other than this astounding ignorance of immigration law, what’s amazing is his contention that access to citizenship was the “core component” of our opposition to the Senate amnesty bill. In fact, it was the virtually automatic — and, in practical terms, permanent — legal status that was the core concern, whether or not the amnestied illegals ever jumped through all the hoops for citizenship. Disagreeing with your critics is one thing, but being unaware of what they’re saying is simply pathetic.
