Iraq is Not Vietnam

Military historian John Keegan on Bush’s recent concession that Iraq has begun to resemble Vietnam:

It has to be said…that the President’s admission will come as a surprise to those with long historical memories…..A large part of the reason for that is the lack of comparability between Iraq and Vietnam. Anyone familiar with both situations will be struck by the dissimilarities, particularly of scale and in the nature of the enemy.

Keegan goes on to provide a superb history lesson. (Also a superb example of concision and clarity. Daily journalism, Keegan proves, can indeed deal with large historical topics.)
