Has there ever been a presidential election where the campaigns have tried harder to shame voters into backing them? Hillary Clinton is infamous for suggesting, in 2016, that roughly half of Trump’s supporters were “deplorables” of various types. In 2020 and again in this race, Trump has said that Jews who do not support him are “dumb” and “disloyal.” And now Barack Obama and pro-Harris ads are suggesting that men (in Obama’s case, black men specifically) are hanging back from supporting Harris because of their allegedly warped views of masculinity, including their supposed desire to “control women.” I don’t know whether this tactic will work. I do know that it’s obnoxious.
