I’m not sure why the Democrats wouldn’t like amnesty gimmicks that are now being discussed. It’s true that those illegals here less than five years wouldn’t get the full McCain-style amnesty, but they wouldn’t have to leave either — because it would require them “to report to an American port of entry, such as an airport or land port, where they would be classified as temporary workers”. An airport? So, to get amnesty, the shorter-term illegals would just have to take the bus to Dulles or LAX instead of to the immigration office. Some compromise.
