I don’t know what other conclusion to draw from the New York Times poll that Jim mentioned earlier and other surveys we’ve seen recently. Now, Democrats have time to pull it back, but they are going to have to pull it back — make Trump even more unacceptable to voters who disapprove of Biden. They obviously have lots of material to work with, and will presumably have more after the trial or trials next year, but this is a perilous business for them. They are trying to ride to victory in a sputtering jalopy of a political vehicle that should be eased back into the garage rather than run out onto the track again in a high-pressure, high-stakes contest.
