Homeland Security and Federalism

The Cato Institute just put up a really interesting interview of Ohio State University and Heritage Foundation’s Matt Mayer. In this podcast, Mayer talks about his new book, Homeland Security and Federalism: Protecting America from Outside the Beltway.

This is the first book I have read on the topic that talks to one key aspect of homeland security: who should be in charge of what. Mayer makes a very effective case, rooted in his experience as the Homeland Security Grant Czar at the Department of Homeland Security (my title), against the push to make the federal government responsible for everything that touches homeland security and disaster response. Mayer advocates a return to federalism. Let’s hope someone is listening to him.
