The Obama Speech

He delivered a great speech. It will surely energize Democrats. The question is whether people are feeling as rosy as he is about the state of the country — the right track/wrong track numbers suggest “no” — and how much of a problem it is that Hillary is now, more than ever, associated with an Obama third term. (Ben Shapiro had a great column yesterday on Hillary’s Obama problem.)

The way around all of this is simply making Trump unacceptable. Bizarrely, the first two nights lacked flame-throwing attacks on Trump from anyone who matters. Last night, the Democrats made up for that deficit. But I’ve been surprised that they haven’t done more to try to make a bread-and-butter economic pitch to working-class voters — instead they’ve emphasized optimism.

Nonetheless pretty much everyone after 9 p.m., with the exception of Tim Kaine, performed well last night and now the question is whether Hillary can, too. It’s going to be hard for her to stand out compared to her opening acts.
