Gratuitous Immigration Watch

The State Department has announced the results of the egregious Visa Lottery for the coming fiscal year (see here, item G). This is the program that admits up to 50,000 people at random from any country in the world other than the top senders of immigrants — 6.4 million people applied, up from 5.5 million last year. Originally cooked up by Ted Kennedy et al. as a way to amnesty Irish illegal aliens, about one-third of winners are now Muslims. The program is a security disaster waiting to happen — I spelled out some of its drawbacks here. Any presidential candidate who called for its elimination (and without just reassigning the visas to another category) would get some instant credibility with immigration hawks.
