For Michigan governor Rick Snyder, authorizing Detroit’s filing for bankruptcy is “the right thing to do and the only viable option” to help the city, its residents, and the state as a whole.
Snyder laid much of the blame for the Motor City’s economic woes on Detroit’s local government. “The real obstacle has been the city government,” he said on the Fox Business Network shortly after the news broke, “and by removing this obstacle, I believe there’s a greater growth opportunity in Michigan.”
He heralded the city’s private sector as having improved in recent years, but said the city government’s inability to manage its finances is holding it back.
Snyder explained that residents will see city services improve and restored as a result of filing for bankruptcy. As an example of how bad they currently are, he pointed out that the average police-response time in Detroit is 58 minutes, compared to the national average of eleven minutes.
“I respect the citizens of Detroit and they deserve a better answer,” Snyder declared.
