My column this morning is a refutation of the specious claim that terrorism is caused by detaining terrorists at Guantanamo Bay — i.e., that the purported symbolism of Gitmo as an extraordinary cruelty to Muslims is a valuable recruiting tool for terrorist organizations. In fact, Gitmo has symbolic value for Bush-deranged Leftists, who first slandered the facility and now project it as a “cause” of terrorism. It makes no difference to the world’s Muslims (particularly the millions sympathetic to jihadist terrorists) whether we detain their co-religionists in an off-shore military brig or in civilian jails — they are offended by the fact of detention, period. The locus of the jail and the legal theory justifying detention are irrelevant.
