The Corner

Fred-Head

I just got back from discovering a new cure for insomnia — a Department of Energy briefing on the price of oil. But I’ve been jarred back to life by response to my use of the word “Fred” and “toast” in the same sentence.

Okay — it’s maybe an exaggeration. Or maybe it isn’t. Regardless of how much Fred deserves the NRLC endorsement, or how little the others deserve it, it’s a fair point that he’s given up a lot of ground to McCain and Romney in key states.

Still, as I noted, this endorsement could help him. And a reader (a “Fred-leaner,” he says) points out that there’s more than one endorsement to be had out there…

So for all the Thompson-is-lazy folks surprised by the NRLC endorsement here is a serious question: Of the top 5 GOP candidates, who do you think the NRA will endorse?

If the answer is Thompson, and there is certainly no guarantee it will be, then FDT will have pocketed 2 core conservative GOP endorsements while having done… not much – that you can report on anyway.  Should that turn out to be the case, then this Primary has a dynamic that no one has really touched on yet.

It’s worth noting, certainly, because there’s no way McCain or Giuliani can get that endorsement, and I doubt they give it to Romney. It’s either Thompson or they effectively stay out. (And for you Ron Paul fans: yes, he’s great on guns, but the NRA hates his guts for voting against a key piece of legislation they wanted — no way he gets their backing.)
