Francis Canavan

As Kathryn notes below, Fr. Francis Canavan passed away this morning. Among his many scholarly achievements, Canavan was one of the great readers and interpreters of Edmund Burke, and a particularly astute analyst of Burke’s critique of the limits of choice as the organizing principle of a society. He was a happy warrior in the mid-20th century battle over Burke and natural law, and all subsequent readers of Burke, wherever they come down on the question, owe Canavan a great debt of gratitude and appreciation. On that subject and on so many others, he wrote with passion and with earnest and open-minded curiosity: a model of scholarship. And more importantly, he was a kind and generous man. RIP.
