The Final Debate

Boca Raton, Fla. — We spent winter in Manchester and Des Moines, following Gingrich and Bachmann as they trudged through snow-covered neighborhoods. Now, months later, the 2012 campaign is (nearly) ending in a warmer climate.

The final debate will begin in a few hours, here at Lynn University. On campus, young men are walking around shirtless, and young women are in bikinis. They’re lounging by the campus pool, and eyeing the passing journalists.

It’s mostly a loose, laid-back scene. But inside the media center, things are pretty tense. Surrogates are everywhere, from Stephanie Cutter to John Sununu. Over the weekend, I spoke with Sununu and others about their expectations.

Robert Costa was formerly the Washington editor for National Review.
