Enforcement First

The White House is expected to finally unveil a concrete immigration proposal at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the 18th, likely to contain tough-sounding promises of future enforcement in exchange for an illegal-alien amnesty up front (dressed up as a “temporary” worker program), plus big increases in permanent immigration. But the odds against it are getting longer by the day, not only because of Katrina and Miers (oh, and it’s terrible policy too, by the way) — now 82 House Republicans (more than one-third of party caucus) have just sent a letter to the president saying that “there should be no new guestworker program or any expansion of the number of lawful residents in our country until the Executive Branch better enforces current immigration laws.” For a list of the current immigration laws not being enforced, go here (may require registration).
