D.C. Dodges a Bullet

A couple of months ago, the only licensed gun dealer in D.C. lost his lease — meaning that residents, despite having a right to own handguns, had no way to purchase them, or even to bring them from outside the city. (Transfers have to go through a dealer.) Thanks to zoning laws and federal requirements, it wasn’t as simple as finding a new spot to rent: The ATF, for example, has 60 days to review and approve a new location. Angry residents sued, alleging their Second Amendment rights were being violated.

Here’s the solution the city came up with: “[The dealer] will be charged $100 per month for space at the Metropolitan Police Department headquarters, Mayor Vincent Gray said Wednesday.”
