Dancing Chairmen

Jay:

During General Wedemeyer’s attempts to bring China’s Nationalists and Communists together in Chungking, 1945-6, both Mao Tse-tung and Chou En-lai attended tea dances held by Wedemeyer’s staff. Reports on the ballroom-dancing prowess of the two ChiCom titans filtered out. The smooth, feline Chou was said to be a superb dancer, in spite of his lame right arm. Mao, on the other hand, though enthusiastic, was a toe-crusher.

(This was, of course, after “Vinegar Joe” Stilwell had been limogée.)
