Former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, an expert on Russia and the former Soviet Union, offered frank comments on the deterioration of the relationship between the United States and Vladimir Putin’s Russia. ”The relationship today is really terrible, just to be very blunt about it,” she said.

The U.S. needn’t bother with negotiating with Russian leaders, she argued, because there are so few areas of possible agreement between the two countries and Russia is no longer the economic and military power that it was during the Cold War. ”President Obama tried to, quote, ‘reset’ relations with Russia — we reset and Russia didn’t,” Rice explained. ”And so the question is, what’s left of our interests in dealing with this Russia?”

She called President Vladimir Putin’s decision to grant asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden a “slap in the face,” and agreed with President Obama’s decision to cancel his bilateral meeting with Putin that was set to occur prior to September’s G20 summit in St. Petersburg.
