The Commies of Cyprus

Responding to this, an e-mailer writes:

I just wanted to point out that there’s at least one other Communist government in Europe – that of Cyprus, where the ‘Progressive Party of Working People’ currently have the Presidency.  Correspondingly, the Cypriot President, Dimitris Christofias, is the first Communist head-of-state in the European Union.

I’m not sure I’d count Cyprus as “European,” though, as the e-malier correctly points out, it is a member of the EU. The definition rides on whether we’re talking politics or geography. But there you have it: The Commies are sadly alive and well in Cyprus.
