Columbine Reading

One page in the release of the Columbine killers’ documents struck me in particular. It is a page from a planning calendar. Across the top is printed an inspirational word of the week, “optimism: your outlook determines your ability to overcome any challenge. Stay positive and focus on solutions, not problems.” Along the left side next to the column for Thursday, April 13, the calendar reads, “Make today count.” Next to it Eric Harris has written, “Death (Afraid?)” Apparently this was the original date for the killings, but above is a brief note “20th 11:10,” the actual date the shootings took place. To the right is a to-do list: Get nails, get gas cans, get duffle bags, get propanes, fill my clips, finish fuses, etc. In the next column, the 15th, Armed Forces Day is marked with several exclamation points.   This page is #74 of the 946 page release . It is one of the most ironic and chilling documents I have seen lately, and I see quite a few.
