Kirkland, a city outside of Seattle, has relocated the launch pad for next week’s Fourth of July fireworks display after discovering that a pair of baby bald eagles are nesting in a tree near the usual site.
Reuters reports that the organizers of the festivities were quick to comply with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regulations, which mandate that fireworks be at least a half-mile away from any active nests of the protected bird. The pyrotechnics company is also tailoring the display to minimize explosive noises.
In addition to the scheduled fireworks, a local society plans to create an observation site from which visitors can see the eaglets using spotting scopes. Families will now be able to celebrate the holiday by catching a rare glimpse of America’s national symbol. How patriotic!
