Citizenship at Birth

My colleague Jon Feere has a new paper on birthright citizenship, tracing the issue both here and abroad. There’s a table and map showing the most up-to-date information on which countries still give automatic citizenship to children born to illegal aliens and tourists — a practice now confined to the Western Hemisphere. I still don’t think this should be a top-shelf issue for immigration hawks, but I can see the virtue in Australia’s approach, where citizenship is not automatic for the kids of illegals, but once they turn 10, if they’ve lived those 10 years in Australia, they can apply for citizenship.
