Hi Kathryn,
Just read your Q and A with [Steve] Hayes. I can’t wait to get my hands on
the book [, Cheney]. I loved the lost in the Pentagon story. It must be the vice
president’s favorite story, too, because he told it to me when I had
the honor of briefly interviewing him when he was defense secretary.
I was covering his commencement speech at a tiny little high school
in Upton, Wyoming. There could not have been more than 25 or 30
graduates! What an honor for them to have such an important
Wyomingite be their speaker. But Wyoming was like that.
People who do not know the state or who do not live there would find
it hard to understand a Dick Cheney, I think. I laugh at the media
image of him as unapproachable, dark, and mysterious. What a joke! He
was my congressman for most of my years in Wyo. That’s a state where
you regularly meet your governor, representative, senators, etc. They
hold meetings in communities and go to the Friday night barbecue
during the county fair. I grew up in Chicago and the closest I ever
came to my city alderman was the bottle opener his lackeys passed out
at our block party.
Love NRO!
