Can’t Anybody Here Run a Convention?

Look, I know that every national Democratic politician — every senator, governor, aspiring senator, aspiring governor, every semi-famous member of the House, every former president, and, of course, AOC — wanted a prime-time speaking slot this week on the stage of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

I know that the organizers of this thing felt like they needed to grease palms and deal out favors to every pol and every hack who has ever helped Kamala Harris or who ever could help Kamala Harris on her rise to the top of Democratic politics.

But shouldn’t the Harris-Walz campaign realize that it’d be better if their party’s biggest stars spoke to the American people on national TV at, say, 8:30 Eastern instead of in the 11 o’clock hour?

Do the people who plan these things not realize that it’d be better if Barack Obama and Bill Clinton spoke while most Americans happened to be — ya know — awake? Normal people have jobs. Normal people have kids that they need to take to school in the morning. Normal people don’t exactly want to listen to New Mexico governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ramble on about . . . whatever . . . at 10:15 on a school night.

Yes, I know that Michelle Obama might very well be the most popular Democrat in America, but wouldn’t you rather stay up to hear from . . . the Honorable John Giles, the — umm — [checks notes] — the mayor of Mesa, Ariz.?

This isn’t just a Democratic problem of course: We all remember how the Republicans put Donald Trump on stage so late that his speech ran into the next day!

But aren’t the Democrats supposed to be the showbiz party? Shouldn’t they be better at this stuff?
