The Corner

Called and on the Phone

Kudos to David Shuster, who just conducted a beautiful interview on MSNBC with Grant Desme, the Oakland A’s hot prospect who is leaving the baseball diamond for St. Michael’s Abbey — a seminary. Why? Shuster asked. You do, after all, “have the potential to be a star,” you could influence people through baseball. Desme answered honestly: That he, of course, had thought about that. But that ultimately, he felt called out of the diamond — and so he had to answer. He told Shuster:  “The only place I can do any good is if I do His will. . . . This is all about Him, this is not about me.”

Shuster was clearly impressed with the surrender. He ended the segment with a genuine “good for him.”
